What Should a Baby Wear Home From the Hospital?

I'll never forget how much time I spent trying to pack the "perfect" hospital bag before Lola arrived. I packed multiple outfits, bows, swaddles, and way more options than we could have ever needed. Like many first-time moms, I imagined bringing her home in the cutest outfit imaginable.

But when the day finally came, none of those carefully planned outfits mattered as much as comfort. It was a cold Thanksgiving Day, and little Lola Grace ended up going home in a simple fleece footed Carter's onesie. Looking back, it was the perfect choice. She was warm, cozy, and comfortable, and that's what mattered most.

The funny thing is that her first days at home weren't spent in the fifteen adorable newborn Christmas outfits I had purchased. Instead, she practically lived in soft bamboo gowns that made middle-of-the-night diaper changes easier and cozy footed onesies with built-in mittens to keep her warm and prevent those tiny newborn fingernails from scratching her face. As a first-time mom, I quickly learned that while cute outfits are fun to buy, the pieces you reach for over and over are usually the ones that make life a little easier for both baby and mom.

What Should You Pack for Baby?

After my experience, here's what I would recommend packing:

  • One special coming-home outfit
  • One backup outfit in a different size
  • A soft bamboo gown for easy diaper changes
  • A footed sleeper or onesie with built-in mittens
  • A swaddle blanket
  • A hat for cooler weather
  • Socks if your outfit doesn't have footies

My Best Advice

Don't stress about finding the perfect outfit. Your baby won't remember what they wore home from the hospital, but you'll remember those first sweet moments together.

Choose something soft, comfortable, and practical. The fancy outfits will have their time, but in those first few days, you'll likely find yourself reaching for the cozy essentials again and again.

What matters most isn't what's in the hospital bag—it's bringing your little one home.
